Proper Glass Selection

|
Proper Glass Selection Key to a Glorious Window Glass selection is critical to creating a beautiful stained glass window. Stained glass is one of the few art forms that rely on transmitted light as opposed to reflected light for illumination. Color, density and texture can be manipulated to control light and direct interest within the church. Less color and/or texture in the stained glass allows colors from the outside environment into the space, making them a integral part of the window. Solar orientation, viewing angle/elevation and distance from the viewer all need to be considered when choosing glass. Light expands as it transmits through the window. Lighter color pieces expand to the eye where as darker pieces will recede. This is all accentuated by distance and sun exposure. ("The Risen Christ "window at the Episcopal Church of St. George, Lady Lake, FL (Pictured at left) is a north facing window utilizing a selection of lightly colored glass to allow the outside environment into the space )
